Meet Your Students’ Union
Hi there! We get it, you’re new to this whole University thing. Specifically, you’re new to Lancaster University, which means you’re also new to LUSU and probably have no idea what we’re talking about. So, let’s talk about it.
First things first…
What is LUSU?
LUSU = Lancaster University Students’ Union!
When you join Lancaster University, you’re automatically enrolled into LUSU – so you don’t need to do anything!
Your Students’ Union is run for students and by students. The top dogs here are literally a bunch of student officers who are just like you, which means that we care about what you care about. Whether that’s academically, socially, environmentally, and more.
We’re here for you.
Which gives us even more questions like…
A Students’ Union is an organisation made up of students and staff who help to provide their students a fulfilling university experience.
Here at LUSU, that means facilitating over 400+ societies and clubs, providing sporting opportunities, coordinating projects on sustainability, giving you advice, housing, and so so much more.
What is a Student Officer?
A student officer is a representative of students at Lancaster University, voted in by the student body during election period.
At Lancaster, we have Full-Time Officers (FTOs) and Liberation & Campaign Officers (LCOs).

Now, we’ve talked about the students who run LUSU. But what about the other staff and what they do?
Advice
Here at LUSU, we’re ready to fight your corner. And that’s exactly what the Advice Team does.
Through whatever you’re going through, the Advice Service can help you and provide a service to get you through it; academic or otherwise. The Advice Service is a completely free, non-judgemental service of professional providers that know what they’re talking about and can support registered students at Lancaster University.
You can read more about our Advice Service, and how to get in touch here.
LUSU Living
In your first year of uni, you’re probably staying in campus accommodation owned by the uni. But after that, you’ll often find that you have to find accommodation in town with other student housing providers.
Lucky for you, one of those just happens to be us!
SU Living manages a whole bunch of accredited Lancaster University student properties, and our aim is to provide you a quality service with plenty of support.
You can read more about how SU Living works here.
Sport
At LUSU, we have an entire Sport Team dedicated to ensuring that sport at Lancaster is accessible, fun, varied, and inclusive for everyone.
Through the Sport Team, who often work in collaboration with Sport Lancaster, we provide plenty of sporting opportunities and events from Turn Up and Play, to the showstopper that is the yearly Roses Weekend.

Societies
Societies are a huge part of student life here at Lancaster… and we oversee over 160 of them!
They’re a great way to meet people, keep doing something you love, or to try something new entirely. Societies will often host events, showcases, and all sorts for you to get involved in.
Find out more about societies in our Society Rundown!
If you have any questions about Societies, you can send them over to societyhelp@lancastersu.co.uk
Your Activities Officer (Jack Watson) is the political lead for all things sport, media, and societies here at LUSU.
LUSU Shop
Students’ union run, LUSU Shop is your friendly student local located directly on campus. Whatever it is you need, LUSU Shop has all the essentials so that all you need to do, is nip down to the shop!
Feeling peckish? We’ve got sandwiches. Looking for some drinks? There’s plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. From food to hygiene, LUSU Shop has it all.

The Sugarhouse
Established in 1982 and ran by us here at Lancaster University Students’ Union, The Sugarhouse (affectionately known as Sugar) is the biggest nightclub in Lancaster. And it’s just for students!
Sugarhouse hosts nights all throughout the academic year, putting on special events with special guests (Dick & Dom, anybody?) to celebrate different periods of the year - from Fresher’s all the way up to Graduation!
You can learn more about The Sugarhouse in our handy little article here.
Not for Profit
LUSU is your Students’ Union, and runs all of it’s services to better support you, our students. Every single penny of profit from all commercial entities run by us goes straight back into supporting you and your student experience.
Whoo, that was a lot of info. Hopefully you’ve learned a little bit more about us here at LUSU. But the most important thing that you need to remember is that we’re here for you.
If you want to get in touch, for any reason, you can always send our Welcome Desk an email at help@lancastersu.co.uk – or send us a quick DM over at @lancastersu on Insta.
No matter what you’re going through, any questions you have, we’re ready and waiting to help!
