Strange Things About Studying at Lancaster as an International Student

Student looking quizzical

Studying at Lancaster University is a great experience, with plenty of opportunities for students, including international students. The uni offers the perfect balance between academics and student life, with a diverse cultural community we’re proud of.

But, with any new environment, Lancaster comes with its own strange quirks that you might need to navigate. Here’s what it’s like to study at Lancaster, from my experience as an international student to help get you started.

The Unique College System

Lancaster University operates on a collegiate system, a little bit like Oxford or Cambridge. Each student is placed in one of a college, which serves as a hub for social activities and support. Your college affiliation influences a lot of your uni experience including accommodation and extracurricular activities. There's also playful rivalry between the colleges that extends to sports and social events, often leading to quirky competitions, and themed events.

Variable Weather

British weather is notoriously unpredictable…and Lancaster is no exception. You could experience sunny skies and then a downpour of rain all in one day! It’s a good idea to be prepared for sudden weather changes when planning your activities – an umbrella is always nice to have on hand.

Late-night Library Culture

Once exam period comes around (and often before it), the library becomes a hub of activity. It’s a great place to take advantage of all the services available, from books to workspaces to get those essays done. The library’s extended opening hours offer you plenty of opportunity for productivity, as well as teamwork with your fellow students.

Sustainability Focus

Here at Lancaster, we’re all about sustainability. The campus has various eco-friendly practices, including recycling initiatives and green spaces. Events from LUSU Green celebrate sustainability and environmental awareness with activities, workshops, and other volunteering opportunities.

Two friends

The term ‘Freshers’ usually refers to first-year students. But it can also refer to the ever-exciting concept of Welcome Week, taking place just before the start of the academic year.

The festivities of Welcome Week can be a little overwhelming with a mix of parties and social events designed to help you explore your new home. But you don’t have to go to everything! Take part where you feel comfortable, and feel free to take a step back where you don’t.
